Written by the only US Congressman who had a career as a renewable energy engineer, Jerry McNerney, along with Martin Cheek, Clean Energy Nation: Freeing America from the Tyranny of Fossil Fuels outlines both the past of energy consumption as well as a realistic blueprint for future survival.
Well Documented and Well Referenced
The book is divided into three sections: America's Energy Past and Present; America's Energy Issues; and America's Energy Future. It's interesting to note that the largest section dwells on the Energy Issues. Each section starts with a sort of preamble of what the chapters in that section will discuss.
This is not a sensationalized edict on the horrors of fossil fuel consumption or the woes America may be headed for. This book is a no-nonsense, factual-based, well researched and well referenced journey into the world of dependence on fossil fuels. America's fascination with fossil fuels is well documented. Arguments are clearly defined and explained for mass transit and other energy conservation methods.
Style and Tone Make the Book Easy Reading Despite Scientific Subject Material
Although the subject might seem too "scientific" for some readers, in fact the style and tone created by McNerney and Cheek provide for an interesting read as well as thought provoking ideas. This is not a preacher book of "I know better than you so listen to me". All sides of the issues are clearly demonstrated with pros and cons clearly stated and weighed, for the reader to decide on their own conclusions.
The authors do not treat the energy issue as merely a stumbling block for companies to continue manufacturing or for the masses to continue their love of current transportation modes. The issues and barriers relating to education are explored, with the call for better management of school systems and objectives as a step towards solutions for a greener and more productive society. Indeed, society as a whole needs better education to raise public awareness of the energy issues and potential solutions.
Informed Call for Action Needed From All
The book does not point fingers at any one group, but does demand a call for action from ALL groups. Public leaders must be educated on the issues; the general public must demand policies that no longer coddle fossil fuel industries but promote a greener solution.
Clean Energy Nation: Freeing America from the Tyranny of Fossil Fuels is impressive in its cohesiveness and clearly defined objectives on the energy issues, while not being dismissive of its readers. McNerney and Cheek's collaborative effort should be required reading for anyone living in North America and wanting our society to survive and thrive.
