The job search and needed survival equipment in today's fierce competition market has changed dramatically; yet too many job hunters are using outdated notions to try to find employment. Martin Yate's Knock 'Em Dead: The Ultimate Job Search Guide 2012 provides a comprehensive life cycle path to the full process of job hunting - from deciding on the type of job you want, to how to get an interview, how to get a job offer, and even how to turn a rejection into a possibility.
Twenty Six Successful Years and Still Relevant/Still Evolving as a Guide
While a lot of the information can be gleaned elsewhere (and not just from Yate's previous editions); it's the way Yate puts it all together into one package along with tips and concrete examples, that elevates this book into a useful guide. He doesn't just tell you to create a professional skill section; he shows you how to build one step by step. Then an example is provided, for a better understanding of what is needed. This is a great help for readers who still aren't sure if what they read and wrote is what the author meant. It allows the reader to get positive reinforcement right away.
Specific Resumes to Highlight Specific Accomplishments for Specific Employment
As hoped for, Yate recommends to always use more than one strategy in all steps of the job search. It is vitally important to have specific resumes for specific jobs; each highlighting the accomplishments that best reflect the hoped-for employment. The need to expand the resume to showcase accomplishments (almost like having a brief cover letter built into your resume) is emphasized; and a handy list of questions to answer to create these sections are provided.
This guide is divided into five main sections, with a total of 25 chapters. I was hoping for 26 to commemorate the 26 years, but perhaps that's a bit too hokey to expect. Part 3 is of particular importance for job interviews: it's how to answer all those tough interview questions, including the illegal ones, and still keep your composure. There's even a chapter on how to ace the psychological and personality tests.
Informative Guide in the Life Cycle Process of the Job Search
This book is a solid addition and informative guide for any job seeker: from the newly graduated to the seasoned job hunter. Its tone is upbeat and uplifting, inspiring hope to even the most jaded; with step by step instructions/fill in sections and examples. This creates a blueprint for success in all points in the job search life cycle process.
