Just as society has progressed from the Stone Age to the Information Age, we are now experiencing the Shift Age (previously predicted by author David Houle) and steamrolling into the New Health Age. This is neither sensationalistic nor gonzo journalism; the facts and progressions are presented with a clear-headedness normally associated with more mundane issues. Nor does this book assume only America is affected (although of course the central subject is geared to health care on home soil). The New Health Age: The Future of Health Care in America by David Houle and Jonathan Fleece is a teaming of experts for the why, where, and how current health care will be affected in the future; and what to do about it now.
Provides a Sea of Reasoning and a Calmness to the Health Care Situation
Thoroughly and correctly referenced (with appropriately generated endnotes), this book provides a sea of reasoning and calmness to a very touchy and emotionally fraught subject. Yet Houle and Fleece present plans for the average patient and healthcare professional, as well as health care decision makers to follow, to ensure a healthy path for all. Yes, there is a radical shift happening, but this does not spell disaster as many tend to predict. Instead, concrete analysis with attainable steps allow for an upbeat future.
Dynamics of the New Health Age Section Explains the Dynamic Flows
This book is divided into three major sections:
- History and Content - a progression of where we were, how we got there, and how we got from there to here. Discussion on previous and current payment systems, with emphasis on the rise of the pharmaceutical power system.
- The Dynamics of the New Health Age - dynamic flows are introduced and explained; this is what will drive the massive changes and how to best work with them.
- The Landscape of the New Health Age - transitions, structures, and best practices for health care professionals to know and follow.
It's the last two sections that hold the key to managing this progressive change. Each section also provides for two Change Visions, which are basically blueprints (and predictions) from experts in varying fields on how to get the most from the shifts and flows. The language is by no means exclusive to those within the health care industry and allows for understanding by the general public. The set up follows accepted adult learning procedures, with a quick Key Points section at the end of each chapter. These Key Points do a wonderful job of summarizing key issues from the reading and work as a great reminder of what has just been read (and hopefully absorbed).
Calm, Reasonable and Uplifting Path
The New Health Age: The Future of Health Care in America is an inspiring book; all negative aspects of the crumbling current health care system are dealt with clearly and concisely, with a cohesive plan for changes to implement now and in the future. Rather than creating an alarmist attitude, authors Houle and Fleece provide a calm, reasonable and uplifting route to what healthcare professionals can do for the ailing health care system, as well as how to do it.
